Witham St Hugh’s, Lincolnshire

We were first instructed by Strawson Holdings Limited to promote the redevelopment of the former RAF Swinderby (formerly the RAF’s School of Recruit Training) in 1996. This was our first commission for what is now one of our largest and longest established clients.

Following the confirmation of the allocation of the Site as a new settlement in the North Kesteven Local Plan, we assembled and led a multi-disciplinary professional team which, as a first step, undertook a comprehensive feasibility and masterplanning exercise that established the development capacity and provided the principal development parameters of the Site. We then undertook a wide-ranging pre-application consultation exercise with the local planning authority and other key stakeholders, before submitting and administering an outline planning application through to determination in 2002 followed by the discharge of planning conditions precedent, the meeting of the Planning Obligation requirements and the implementation of the development on a phased basis.

Strawsons took on the role of installing in the physical infrastructure (roads and drainage), the structural landscaping and strategic open space, and developing the new village centre, whilst selling off discrete housing cells to major housebuilders. We were instrumental in introducing a number of these early housebuilders to Strawsons. Phases 1 and 2 totalling nearly 1000 dwellings will soon be built out.

We are now promoting a major new northern extension to the Village with the District Council and have secured a resolution to grant outline planning permission which will deliver up to 1250 additional market, affordable and retirement homes alongside enhanced education, sports and community facilities. We are optimistic that an increased critical mass of population in the village will continue to attract and develop a wider range of facilities for the local community.

Aspbury Planning are proud winners of the RTPI East Midlands’ Development Scheme of the Year award 2016 in recognition of our achievements at Witham St Hugh’s.
